40 years of EU-funded research; €93.5b allocated up until 2027

This year marks 40 years of EU-funded research, with the European Commission’s ambitious Horizon Europe programme promising to continue to support research and innovation with a budget of €93.5 billion until 2027.

“Over the years, we have invested about €283 billion in research,” the EC said on its social media.

As it added, more than 30 Nobel Prizes have been won by EU-funded researchers, while over 120,000 grants have been provided to about 75,000 beneficiaries.

“Looking ahead, our ambitious Horizon Europe programme will continue to support research and innovation with a budget of €93.5 billion until 2027,” it said. “We have set concrete goals through EU Missions to bring solutions to some of the greatest challenges of our time,” it added, listing these as:

  • Adaptation to Climate change
  • Cancer: working with Europe's Beating Cancer Plan
  • Restore our Ocean and Waters
  • A Soil Deal for Europe
  • 100 Climate-Neutral and Smart Cities by 2030
