European Parliament welcomes USB-C port as EU electronic devices common standard

All new mobile phones, tablets, digital cameras, headphones, speakers, keyboards and many other electronics sold in the EU will have to be equipped with a USB Type-C charging port, the European Parliament said in a post on X.

As stated, the standardised charging port will apply to all devices "regardless of manufacturer, benefitting the consumers’ wallet and the environment".

The European Parliament had approved the respective legislative proposal in October 2022, as part of a broader EU effort to reduce e-waste and to empower consumers to make more sustainable choices. From spring 2026, the obligation will extend to laptops.
